Political-military-economic link to sports and recreation: sport and military, sport and rural life, tavern culture. Garrison, tavern, men"s club: most important social institutions in pre-confederation era. Wrestling, boxing: between individuals or communities. Animal sports: bear-baiting (fighting a chained-up bear) Winter sports, skating: not appropriate for women. Life was a physical contest: no separation between work and recreation. Constant work: create opportunities for fun, drinking and feast when you can. Work bees: applied to rural people, centred around the construction of a physical structure such as a barn, strength signified class values and masculine identify, often just paid in alcohol or food. Key organizing principle for life in the new land. Applied to all men: how physically capable the men were, using weapons in a bar fight was dishonourable. For the male elite, emphasis not on physical ability. Rather, focus on the process of relations between men.
