Social determinants such as race and gender are widely discussed in canadian culture. This is not the case for social class. Social class often remains unremarked or invisible: this matters to us who work in the health related professions because social class has a significant impact on peoples life chances, and thus their capabilities to make informed lifestyle choices. Lifestyle choices have health and fitness implications, and in this day and age, very often problematic ones. Factors contributing to economic inequality: most of the current wage gap disparity occurred during the recessions of the 1980s and. Income inequality stands as a critical barrier to both the quality of opportunity and equality of condition in all aspects of social participation, including sport. Early theories of class: to establish a critical reflective perspective on these developments and circumstances, the authors briefly discuss to early theories of social class, and follow up with a brief reflection on a more current theory.
