Kinesiology 2250A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Male Privilege, Masculinity, Lightning
Document Summary
Unit 5 chapter 7: violence in sports. You may have heard that just last week the u. s. republican party presidential candidate, donald trump, defended his 2005 talk of committing sexual violence against women, as (inconsequential) locker room talk of boys simply being boys. Leaving aside trumps personal inclinations, it is interesting to note for our purposes in unit 5, that the donald attempted to relativize his earlier statements (and actions) by - entering a site of sport, the locker room. Unit 5, it so happens, addresses this question. We will also stay focused on the fact that the effects of gender as a social determinant work differently for women and girls, as compared to men and boys (we all already experienced this, i am sure). In these deliberations, we are still guided by the understanding that we have to move beyond the notion of gender being merely a biological category.
