Kinesiology 2241A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Angular Velocity

17 views1 pages

Document Summary

Angular momentum is related to the radius of gyration sqared (l =mk2w) When you change the radius of gyration, you change the angular velocity squared. Since individual segments can generate angular momentum internally, this can be used to delay or speed up rotation in the rest of the body. If ski jumping and the overall body is rotating forward too much = face plant. Swinging arms forward causes rest of body to rotate backward, restoring proper position. When a gymnsat leaves an apparatus with some unwanted twisting rotation about their long axis, they can do a cowboy tuck: knees out to the sides slows the twisting about the long axis. When a volleyball player goes up for a spike they have no angular momentum about the longitudinal axis: the striking arm generates a twist internally, this twist must be coutneracts by the rest of the body.
