Kinesiology 2230A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Hot Air Balloon, Anaerobic Glycolysis, Calorimetry
Document Summary
For accurate results, we need to know the speed and how much they weigh. And from the calorimeter chambers, we can know how much heat is produced; if we can measure the heat that is being produced we can measure how much work they are doing. Measuring the flux or movement of substrates through glycolysis, kreb"s cycle, etc. If we can measure how much oxygen we can consume, then we know how much energy that person is actually using. At maximal capacity this is termed maximal oxygen uptake, maximal aerobic power, mvo2, vo2max, maxvo2. Vo2max is probably the best single measure of cardiorespiratory capacity. Vo2max may be reported as either absolute (l/min) or relative (ml/kg/min) values. Increasing intensity of workload, increase in oxygen uptake. Eventually get to a point where the work rate continues to increase, o2 uptake stops increasing. Aerobic pathway is maxed out: the additional work must be done anaerobically. Vo2 = o2 inspired o2 expired.
