This system is involved in the uptake portion of vo2 and the removal of co2: produce co2 in kreb"s cycle, diffuses into bloodstream, have to get rid of it. Important in acid-base status of blood and cellular environment: co2 + h, co2 is a weak acid, ph will drop as co2 is produced, concentration of hydrogen ions is directly related to ph; ph drops as [h+] increases. Thermoregulation: btps as a correction used for lung volumes, air warmed to 37 degrees celsius in the lung, air exhaled carries heat with it, warmth comes from temperature of lungs themselves. In particular, when people are getting cold: elimination of heat with exhalation can contribute to hyporthermia; people getting colder. Bronchi: larger radius area: bifrucations called bronchioles, bronchitis: infection of the bronchioles; mucus excreted; affects ability to get. Terminal points of bronchioles (spherical shape); alveoli. Surface area of each alveoli laid out flat: size of a tennis court = 90m2.
