Serratus anterior: from ribs 1-8, runs along the rib cage to underneath the scapula inserting on the medial border of the scapula. Keeps the scapula tight to the back of the rib cage. When you contract, it pulls the medial border of the scapula tight to the back of rib cage. This protects the shoulder girdle from damage as it withstands a lot of force when lifting and especially when pushing objects and therefore doesn"t take on that much force by protecting it. Inability to contract when individuals push against a wall (cid:1688)winging scapulae(cid:1689) and the scapula moves laterally across to brace itself across the head of the humerus.
