Document Summary

Independent groups design: different subjects are assigned to each group (aka between-subjects design ) Decision to assign an individual to a particular condition is completely random. Usually use random sequence of numbers generated by computer. Prevents systematic biases > groups equivalent on participant characteristics (income, intelligence, age, etc) Repeated measures design: subjects are assigned to each group (aka within-subjects design) Each participant assigned to both levels of the iv. Participants are repeatedly measured on the dv after being in each condition of the experiment. More sensitive to finding statistically significant differences between groups. Greater chance to detect a difference b/c there is less variability. Order effect: the effect that the order of introducing treatment has on the dv. Ex. performance on second task might improve bc of practice. Practice: improvement in performance as a result of repeated practice with a task.
