Identifying the sample: how will i know when i understand my topic, determining (cid:494)sample size(cid:495) Participant: the researcher joints a group and observes their activities. Non-participant: the researcher observes the activities without taking part in them. Direct: observing the behaviour / event as it occurs. Indirect: observing the results of the behaviour / event, rather than the behaviour itself. Disguised: the subject is not aware they are being observed. Undisguised: the subject is aware of being observed. Structured: a priori identification of what will be observed and recorded. Unstructured: no restriction placed on what the observer will document, all behaviours are monitored and recorded. Human: observer is a person, eg the researcher. Non-human: observer is a device, eg technology. Considerations: collect data where and when the phenomenon is occurring, rely on observation of the event, not on participant experience of the event, knowledge of what people do, not why they do it, eg motivation, attitude, innate conditions.
