Kinesiology 2032A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Fire Hydrant, Deductive Reasoning, Null Hypothesis
Document Summary
Research design in human movement sharon cheng 1. Outline: theory/ law/ inference inductive, deductive/ hypothesis null hypothesis. Describe objects/events that are not directly observable. Describe aspects that we can use to explain what we can"t observe. Theory is specific, eg. big bang theory = a specific event. Law is general, eg. law of gravity = all objects with mass are included. Tells us how gravity applies to all things. Types of inference (basically outside looking in or inside looking out) Common sense approach inductively infer monkeys like bananas. Given premise x, the conclusion is reasonable. Eg. given that the emeralds observed are green, it"s reasonable to conclude emeralds are green. A logical argument supports the conclusion, but does not necessitate it. Using specific observation to create a broad generalization. Eg. quantum theory: through the act of observing, the observer affects the observed reality.
