Document Summary
Chronic disease: ncds are not passed from person to person. They are of long duration and generally slow progression. The 4 main types are: diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory disease, ncd = non communicable disease (not infectious, this who definition is not great because, some chronic diseases can be passed from person to person (ie. hiv/aids) "long duration" = not specific enough: slow progression isn"t accurate because some chronic diseases can occur acutely. Incidence: number or percentage of new cases in any given year. Prevalence: total number of people currently living with the condition. If someone dies, they are no longer counted in the prevalence pool. The "big four" chronic diseases (with strong links to physical inactivity) Fewer ppl over 10 years are affected by cancer. Trend up a bit likely due to aging pop. Leading a physically active lifestyle can reduce the risk of many cancers (e. g prostate, breast, colorectal cancers)
