Igneous measn fire, because they are formed from magma in the earths center. As cooling comes down it forces magma to crystalize which will eventually form an igneous rock. Norman bowman from kingston, he was the worlds best when it came to igneous rock. He subjected artificial mixtures in high temperature labs. Through bowmens reaction series in which crystals settle in a magma chamber. Earlier dark crystals remove heavy elements leaving melt with lighter ones (magmatic differentiation separation of lighter and heavier crystals as the magma chambers cool down). He found out that there were two different series: Also assimilation (host rock melts in magma), magma mixing. Assimilation: is when the magma enters the dike. Dark versus light mineral (ie. fe, mg vs silica) content. Igneous textures: size, shape, arrangement of mineral crcystals. Aphanitic (fast cooling magma, small crystals) crystals are too small to see with your eyes. Phaneritic (slow cooling magma, large crystals) visible due to slow cooling.
