Kinesiology 1080A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Motor Neuron Disease
Document Summary
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (cte): progressive degenerative disease of the brain found in athletes (and others) with a history or repetitive brain trauma, including symptomatic concussions as well as asymptomatic subconcussive (subconcussive events) hits to the head. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is linked to participation in contact sports and results in : progressive decline of memory and cognition, depression, suicidal behaviour, poor impulse control, aggressiveness, parkinsonism, (eventually) dementia, motor neuron disease (similar to als) ** note: concussions are really, mild traumatic brain injuries. A study looked at the frequency of concussions in various sports, the higher the number indicated, the greater the frequency of concussions for athletes participating in that sport. It indicated that the most frequency concussions was found in male football, but this sport also has many more athletes playing football, and therefore it can attribute to the high frequency of concussions in that sport.
