Is the study and analysis of distribution and determinants of health and disease conditions in defined populations. Without it we wouldn t have kinesiology and so much knowledge for public health. It identifies risk factors and causes of disease and stuff like that. Can get quantitative understanding of the exposure-disease relationship. With something like parachuting survival you have to use observation overtime of incidents, you can"t just do experiments where people jump out of the plane. What happens to smokers (compare smokers and non-smokers with the incidence of lung cancer. A group of individuals is identified and studied to see what events befall them. Important: disease rates in cohort studies are often expressed relative to. "person year" reps 1 year of observation for an individual during the follow-up period.
