Better to look an association in a prospective nature, not retrospective. Distribution relates to the frequency of patterns and disease occurrence. Prevalence or how often the disease occurs. Incidence is the rate of new disease or health events. Basically only way for exposure-disease relationship can be obtained. Cohort is prospective, case control is retrospective. Disease rates in cohort studies are often expressed relative to person years . 2 events per 37 person years of observation; add up observational years, calculate x. Direction of time always moving forward, follow up could be whenever. Case control study looks at a bunch of people with a de ning characteristic. Typically look for treatments which reduce event rates.
