Smoking damages lungs" natural cleaning and repair system and traps cancer-causing chemicals in lungs. Chemicals mix together = form stick tar that lines the inside. When cilia (clean out gunk) covered in tar= can"t clean out all the gunk and it can cause disease-cancer. Smoking permanently damages alveoli (air sacks/balloons)= hard to breathe. When damaged= less stretchy and harder for lungs to breathe. Compare health care consumption of a smoker and non smoker at each age vs. calculating the total population cost due to smoking at each age. Overall smokers actually cost the health care system less > they die younger. Recognized in all canadian health strategy says that stopping smoking at any age is related to clear health bene ts. After 12 hours co level in blood drops to normal.
