Don"t have de nite tests for any mental disorders, have lots of data but no conclusive test. Resort to social values and norms to determine which form of madness are acceptable of not witches. Madness = affective ex. anger range fury. When treating the mad like wild beasts often thought that they were beasts. Madness involves complete highjacking of region and nothing about you is human anymore. Mad thought to be less than truly human. Have to domesticate them ex. starving them, abusing them. Some kids of treatments for the mad people ex. locking them up like animals they were seemed to be. Mania: manic, mental, crazy, mental patients were seen to have mania: mental illness marked by periods of great excitement, euphoria, delusions, overactivity.
