Health Sciences 3300A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Deep Perineal Pouch, Superficial Perineal Pouch, Urinary Meatus
Document Summary
Lecture 16 male reproductive system ii penis & glands. Deep perineal pouch: membranous urethra, external urethral sphincter, voluntary control of micturition, deep transverse perineal m, support pelvic floor, resist intra-abdominal pressure, bulbourethral glands, dorsal neural and vascular pathways. Superficial perineal pouch: root of penis, proximal spongy urethra. Free portion: has no muscles, erectile tissue. Forms head of penis: neck of the glans, grooved constriction, external urethral orifice. In relaxed state, usually covered in skin if uncircumcised. Hypospadias: external urethral orifice under penis, relatively common congenital anomaly, repair restores appearance, urogenital function unimpaired, cause, genetic, maternal age. Treatment: surgery in first year, use foreskin to make repairs, catheter placed to maintain shape. Subcoronal slightly inferior to where it is supposed to be: midshaft complete closing of the glans, more inferior urethral opening. Urethra usually sits in erectile tissue which helps it stay open. In the case of penoscrotal, it can collapse on itself and require surgical intervention.
