Document Summary
Boundaries separate a system from its environment and delineate the parts and processes within that system. Boundaries also determine the relatedness and relationship between systems. Because of this, boundaries need to be defined yet flexible and as systems/organizations develop, they become more differentiated and require more boundaries. Happens at both the interpersonal and intrapersonal (intrapsychic) level. At the intrapsychic level; the psyche becomes better differentiated and integrated (id, ego, superego) Psychological health relies on establishing boundaries while maintaining the necessary relatedness: family level. Managing boundaries between family members is important. Roles and generational boundaries need to be developed. Family problems usually occur because the boundaries are too loose or rigid, which affects relatedness. Psuedomutuality is when a family looks like its well-related but lack sufficient boundaries/ differentiation. In organizations, unlike families, there is much more differentiation and integration isn"t as threatened by the removal of 1 person.
