Dsm-5 is the major psychiatric manual in us and canada. Includes diagnostic criteria for major forms of psychological disorder: to meet criteria, client must have a fairly high degree of severity and symptoms must persist over period of time. Life time prevalence of dsm disorders by age and we see a pattern that is overwhelming where you look at differences between 18-44 vs. 75+ age group. This says that there is only about 20-25% of older adults that actually meet the criteria for any mental disorders and this includes dementia. Only in the dementia case is where we see a higher proportion of older adults compared to younger adults. The key point in this slide is that older adults with chronic illnesses have more anxiety or mood disorders. This is a table of lifetime disorders for all those people that are 65+
