Male youth street culture: pavos and cunningham-burley (1999) Setting the stage: growing concern about youth, especially young men, and how they spend their leisure time i. e. , drinking, smoking, doing drugs, hanging out, looking at behaviors that might seem common. This is a small town that had recently experienced economic transition with not many economic opportunities leisure is important for the young people. The media attention and piecemeal policy responses reflect the moral panic that surrounds these young people and their behavior. Moral panic blow a situation out of proportion and create anxieties around it that are more than the actual danger. There is a lot of moral panic around teenagers. Shift away from focusing on these behaviors as isolated and high risk and contextualize it. The researchers wanted to understand the meanings and motivations of the young people on the streets. Allows them to gain insight into the diverse, shifting, and value-laden contexts in which the youth"s health-related behavior occurs.
