Seen as so different and troubling from their parent"s generation; difference is often constructed as something that is problematic. The nature vs. nurture debate was involved in psychiatry, iq testing, and categorizing various behaviours as normal or abnormal; adolescents were often used in these scientific approaches. A critique is that adolescence has always been manipulated for the social gains of larger societies. Young people were seen in contradictory ways. Made sure that adolescents were controlled and were not too much of a problem. The idea of adolescence being a problem was a social construction. Wwi and wwii led to destabilization in the world which leads people to want to control things and bring things to an equilibrium which was done with adolescents.
