The emergence of medicalization of adolescence in canada. During canada"s century (20th century) adolescents presented as a social problem . Medicine a powerful domain through which this problem was identified and controlled. Linked with the following factors: increased socio-economic change, wwi and wwii, urbanization, mixed-sex socialization, popular and youth culture. Together, these factors seen to challenge the status-quo. 12-24 year olds were the healthiest of all age groups but they were constructed as problematic (c. 1920-1970) Professionalization: psychologists, psychiatrists, educators and social workers formulated a body of shared ideas and approaches to the health of the young . Led to the establishment of theories of modern adolescence, establishment of regulatory policies intended to enforce what was normal in each life stage. This concern shared across scientific disciplines: connected to fears about the destabilization of western" society as a result of industrialization, urbanization, and mass immigration. Adolescents framed as vulnerable and as key resource to combat and control.
