Document Summary
The heart is located in the pericardial sac within the mediastinum (middle region: mediastinum is the space between our lungs. The pericardial sac is a bag of ct that holds the heart. The heart sits at an angle slightly off to the left side. The heart is medial, sits directly between the r&l lung. Divisions of the mediastinum: superior mediastinum = 1st rib sternal angle, great vessels found here vessels that come off or enter into the heart, can also find the esophagus and trachea here. Inferior mediastinum = sternal angle diaphragm: anterior not much here, middle where the heart is, posterior where the great vessels are carried through. If sac was not anchored to these, the heart would go flying: contains fluid to prevent friction when the heart beats. If the heart rubs against sac 100x a minute without the fluid, it creates friction and wear-down. Pericardial layers: pericardium = covering of the heart.
