If bone was solid, it would be extremely heavy: need it to be hollow in order to be able to move. Axial vs. appendicular skeleton: axial - 80 bones, appendicular - 126 bones. Axial bones: bones associated with the trunk of the body, bones that lie on the axis of symmetry of the body, are considered axial bones, all other bones (limbs) are considered part of the appendicular skeleton.
