Health Sciences 2300A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Carpool, Phalanx Bone, Jelly Bean
Document Summary
Disaster of anatomy, because a lot of movements in the hand are unique to us as a species. Follow the traditional rules of anatomy, the general trends (medial to lateral, and proximal to distal) In the hand, we seem to do everything backwards, ex. I(cid:374) the a(cid:374)ato(cid:373)i(cid:272)al positio(cid:374), thu(cid:373)(cid:271) is (cid:374)u(cid:373)(cid:271)er o(cid:374)e a(cid:374)d so o(cid:374) . Traditionally we go medial to lateral, but with the hand we go lateral to medial, which is unique to the hand. Abduction rule is moving something to the midline, but in the hand abducting the fingers is closing the hand. In the digits, we have phalanges; in digits 2-5 there are 3 phalanges. In the thumb you are missing a phalanx. You have a total of 14 phalanges in the hand. Each phalanx has a head, body and base (important for muscle attachment) Carpools are at bottom of the palm. 8 carpals, organized into two rows (proximal and distal row)
