Health Sciences 2300A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Thoracic Wall, Aorta, Scaphoid Bone
Document Summary
Bones provide a framework to the body and support the body. Muscles are simply connecting organs that attach to bones and allow us to move the framework of our body. It is the muscles and the bones working together to create this movement. Bones also offer protection, such as in the case of the skull, where cranial bones protect the brain. As another example, the heart and the lungs are protected by the thoracic cavity. There are many organs that are protected by bones. Bones also contain red bone marrow, which is where we produce new red blood cells. The red bone marrow is usually produced in flat bones. In long bones, such as the femur, there is yellow bone marrow, which is simply fat. Bones act as a buffer in the body. Calcium is a critical agent that regulates the necessary functions of organs. The bone is a storage depot for calcium.
