Health Sciences 2300A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Stratum Corneum, Adipose Tissue, Keratinocyte
Document Summary
Hypodermis layer of fat between dermis and muscle below. Looking at someone, you are looking at dead tissue (outside layer is dead). Keratinized squamous epithelium: keratinocytes (tough, carry melanin (form of colour in the skin) granules): Melanin is not produced by keratinocytesust taken up by them: melanocytes (colour granules, uv protection) : Make up 8% of cells in skin. Situates itself like an umbrella over nucleus. Exact same number of melanocytes no matter what the colour of your skin (white, brown, black etc. ) Very pale cells break down melanin very quickly (only difference is how your body breaks down melanin herefore darker skin breaks down melanin slower): merkel cells (sensory) : Responsible for tactile senses (ability to feel touch). Tend to be on bottom near to oxygen (as further you move up the less oxygen there is): langerhans cell (macrophages) : Scavengers go around and pick up toxins among others. Merkel + langerhans= last 2% of cells.
