Document Summary
Algorithms: evaluate all possible solutions, will always generate in the correct decision as you will have explored all possible outcomes to make the decision however take a long time. Heuristics: solution based on probability and prior knowledge/experience, not always correct however very quick, e. g. Rubix cube: heuristics tell you how to turn the cube in order to solve it quickly (experts have prior experience): e. g. determining sex of an infant relying on previous information to determine sex based knowledge of genetalia. Algorithms are not possible in healthcare: time consuming, expensive. Doctors must use clinical expertise and impressions to determine probable diagnosis: e. g. abdominal pain & appendicitis. Heuristics are frequently, but not always correct. When heuristics fail, they can have major consequences: e. g. medical misdiagnosis: wasting time taking out one organ when it is other organ that is damaged Heuristics often used in deciding a person"s sex & gender.
