Document Summary

The new nations: political and economic challenges november 22, 2011. Goal: unite all spanish speaking countries (anglo speaking= a danger) War between bolivia and peru on one side and bolivia and chile on the other (wins coast) Empire of brazil becomes republic in 80s. Main issues: liberalism (ideology) liberation/ freedom. Democracy, need people to be informed, universal suffrage. Economy: free trade, free market, less taxation, de regulation/entrepreneurialism, getting rid of guilds etc. Want small businesses that compete with each other in a free market- get rid of monopolies. Difficult to bring liberal ideas to latin america (minority v majority)- why we see rebellions. Fragmenting the areas, impossible to unite them again. A bunch of guys with guns running around - potential for problems. A lot of expenses (army, representation etc) Many spaniards left after wars of independence. Britian- experiencing production growth at this point, cant compete. Liberals- legal equality- a big group does not fit into this notion (slaves)
