The Church
1. Organization and Structure
Secular clergy:
- Pope
o Head of the western European Roman-Catholic church
o Petrine doctor:
▪ Beside on a chapter of the bible
▪ Peter the first bishop at Rome
o Apostolic Succession
▪ Authority of bishop is passed down from one to another without
any broken line the succession
o Vicars of Christ
▪ Popes identify themselves as the Vicars of Christ
▪ Someone who occupies an office, until an actual office bearer
returns
▪ Pope holds the positon until such time that Christ returns
▪ The kings and monarchs of western Europe not okay with this
o The doctrine of papal infallible have not been formalized
▪ Without error and the full authority as God

• Speaks from the word of God himself

o One rank below the pope
o Leaders of bishops in a given province
o A regional governor
o Often appointed by the prince/monarch of western Europe

• Manage and appoints all the lower clergy

▪ A percentage of their income (10%) goes to the church
▪ Giving back to god what he gave to you
▪ 1500, see tithes not necessarily going to where they supposed to

church
