Zwingli and The Radical Reformation
- How was Luther misunderstood in terms of theologically, social life and politically?

o Zwingli is educated as a humanist
o Luther publishes tracts in 1521

o Erasmus is the smartest individual in western Europe
o Correlated and standardized a new edition of the Greek new testament

o Zwingli meets Erasmus in Glarus
o Zwingli concludes the same things as Luther
▪ Both reject merit theology, the hierarchy/structure of sacramental Rome
and replace it with sola fide, sola scriptura and sola gratia
o 3 main differences
▪ Luther: through extreme, emotional/internal turmoil and upheaval
▪ Zwingli: intellectually, through studying
• same conclusions but different paths
▪ 1. What they find in the bible
• both say the bible is the only authority in the lives of Christians
• Luther: gives a blueprint for reforming the south and the church
o bible doesn’t tell you how to build a wider community,
state and church are fundamentally different entities (divine
influence), with no direct relationship with each other
o god looks at us as individuals
