Booming population in europe, well-trained youths looking for something to do before they settle down. They"re not conscious of this, but a sense of pent up aggression and people looking for ways to expel it. Has not necessarily been the norm up to this point. As primogeniture becomes the norm, younger sons looking for ways to provide for themselves and plan their futures. Ic and other stuff is manifestations of this. People are more invested in their religion and church than they have been. All this^ made the crusades possible and attracted: young men with nothing to do, invested in their idea as christians. Began with mohammed, merchant in medina (saudi arabia), 622. Started getting visions and developing new religious ideas. Spread very quickly after his death in 630s, much faster than christianity. Taken over syria and egypt by 640, persia by 650, africa by 698 -> military conquest, associated with political leadership very quickly.
