Warfare not about religion anymore (not as central as in past centuries) Wars conducted for business, profit, trade, territories. The officer class drawn for the aristocracy (only men dependent on the crown can be trusted to command their forces) Governments generally lacked the means to push war towards a total victory (no concept of total war in the 18th century) Armies consisted of soldiers from the lower class, fought for pay not for nationalism.
