Industrialization caused new urban middle class; new mode of factoring, bureaucrats. New middle class v eager and anxious to establish their own identity. Public: male (paid work, politics); private: female (family, household, Idea that there should be public and private sphere domestic) Elites didn"t work so you didn"t have to distinguish yourself in this way. Working class had to work (men + women) Two sex model made this ideology easier to implement. Qualities considered well suited to their respective spheres. Two sex model and separate spheres v popular. Kept women out of public sphere so they weren"t competition for men in public sphere.
