Sexologist = a doctor (md or psychiatrist) who focused on sex. Homosexuality = less approved than lesbianism: b/c sex was still seen as dick & vagina. Homosexual identity begins to emerge after the enlightenment period in the mid-19th century. In the early 1920s after ww1 = very negative views on homosexuality, people wanted normalcy after the chaos: normalcy = the stable heterosexual family, also seen after ww2. Traditional family/gender roles from the victorian/enlightenment period. Huge emphasis on the cosmetics industry, women wanted to impress men returning from war: makes women more marriageable & a subject for romance = promotes heterosexuality. The creation of public urban space (mid 19th century) Even w the excessive heterosexuality promotion homosexuality identity begins to emerge: d/t the large new urban centres where gay men & women could create a subculture for themselves in public leisure spaces.
