More than black noise : hip hop and what it means to be black in america. Mid 1990s hip hop fractured into two: old school east coast style and the new school west coast style. Old school drew inspiration from where hip-hop began: the south bronx. Mid 1970s - the music coming out of the south bronx was a gritty, social commentary on the harsh realities of the chronic poverty many african americans were experiencing. West coast style was devolving into an orgy of violence celebrating gangsta life styles of the street gangs you could find in south-central la. The la based tupac shakur and the ceo of death row records were in a fued with a new up and comer from new york notorious b. i. g and his producer puff daddy. Grew on their gangster past and recorded hip hop songs which glorified the successes of the gangster life style.
