Previous native land always ended up in the hands of white settlers and the american government. Children moved to schools forced to learn english, become christians. Binary logic: binary opposites are rarely neutral (one better than the other) Only know the self, by knowing the other. The other is often a projection of ourselves. A projection of our own image of what someone is. Our relationship to the other is attracted and repulsed. The other can be companion or alien. How we understand difference in our society/culture. White performers project and image of blackness. Racial otherness produced through the relationship between self and other. Stereotype: taking one image and using it as a representative of a whole group. A man who lived in nature/outside of civilization. New world offered mankind a do over. Fought in revolutionary war against natives who sided with the british. Emerged out of the combination of fact and fiction.
