First films would"ve been vaudeville, boxing matches, Limitation only allowed 1 viewer at a time. Started a race to create a more practical movie projector. Edison persuaded 2 sets of inventors to pool resources created . Could present movie to a large audience. Got patents, established 1909 motion picture patents company. Edison was able to monopolize at a very early stage the motion picture industry. If you wanted to show a movie had to go through the trust. Illegal under us anti trust laws brought before the courts who ruled against it and broke up the trust. Greatest profits were not to be made in controlling the hardware, but in controlling the films edison was an idiot.
