The reformation: single largest change to the christian church in its first 1200 years of existence, why is religion so important: Didn"t have as much scientific knowledge so it helped them explain thing. A way to belong to a community and to have a common ideology. Died younger so wanted to believe in something afterwards, the afterlife. Part 1: christendom: medieval europe and christendom were the same thing almost everyone was christian, only one christian church, one view, one church, one voice, one community. Rome was such a dangerous place that the pope had to leave and went to. Popes liked the south of france so they built a palace and stayed there. This was a huge scandal in rome and rumour spread that the pope really needed to go back. 1378: pope died, cardinals had to vote on a new pope; the vote was split, one pope to stay in avignon and one to go back to rome.
