President polk and the treaty of guadalupe hidalgo. Winter night in 1848 there came a rider into the valley of the guadalupe, virginia bringing the treaty that ended the mexican war. President polk read the treaty and didn"t like it: threw it on the floor. Why was polk mad? he expected he"d gain more than he did expected northern mexico he set up administration that wasn"t needed: was forced to send the treaty to congress and have it ratified. Was angry that most people were slave owners and people questioned how they made their country great. Slave holding southern people made this republic. The questions of the future of the republic were answered: it"s about land and territory. Over half of the male white population owned property. Needed to set up laws and administration. Land was important because it gave a market to the economy.
