During wwi, japan had the chance to grow. Japan went through period of reform military, industry. 1890s japan went to war with china and russia(defeated russia) Japan then conquered taiwan, southern manchuria, and korea. Japan enterance into china was kept in check by the other super powers: economically cause economics fell elsewhere. Industry chemicals, iron, steel: political control attacked german possesions in china.
