Document Summary

World war 1 lecture 7, january 25, 2016. Generals on all sides were incompetent, unintelligent, lacked creativity. There were also many generals who had good ideas and were willing to try new things. Most generals rejected and objected the new technologies that could have ended the war. Once one side used gas, everyone began using gas. Soldiers began wearing officially issued gas masks. Chemical warfare could be a war winning weapon. Gas allows soldiers to avoid large battles. In gaseous form it can be inhaled (blisters in lungs/esophagus) If tanks had been used effectively they could have had a larger impact (myth) Most british generals were trained on horse. The tanks in wwi were not decisive machines. Very large machines, hard to maneuver, very slow. No ventilation, very hot inside (crews would become unconscious) Have to move in straight lines that have been clearly marked. Can not move in areas that have been heavily shelled (everywhere was shelled)
