1st canadian born officer to command a canadian core. For arthur the war had come at a perfect time, as his life was going nowhere at the time. He became the greatest general canada ever produced. Not an easy man to get to know personally. Undeniable gifts as a military commander: passchendaele. Also known as the third battle of ypres. Weather was terrible, continues rain, wettest summer in recent memory. Made only 6 km for massive casualties. Artillery fire also destroyed natural draining systems, so the water just sat there. Things sank into the mud, the horses would drown. Beginning of the passchendaele campaign did not involve the canadian core. They were brought in at the end to capture the village of passchendaele at the cost of 15000 men. If it attempted to clear the coast it was a complete disaster: conscription for canada. Passchendaele had a huge impact on canada.
