Document Summary

Lecture 2 fluvial system and channel classification. Fluvial system is described by the type of material that the water runs over (i. e. bedrock or alluvial material). A contributing factor in which a river"s shape comes from, is the cohesiveness of the parent material. Bed rock rivers are not solely located in mountain systems, they are also present in the lowlands as well. We can also get into some channels that are mainly formed based on the rivers flow and movement of sediment, as opposed to the parent material. Step-pool channel: a series of flat sections (pools) which are closed off, or semi-damned by large boulders which have formed, the large rocks are the same size as the channel. Plane bed river: similar to the step-pool cascade, but the distance between the steps and pools are significantly smaller. Braided channel: very large in width, vegetation can be seen in the middle, lateral development of bends and channels is prevalent here.
