Research and colonization: worthlessness to indigenous peoples/ useless to them, telling indigenous peoples things, they already know, data = support claims, no data = no problem. Research has also caused considerable harm and exploitation. Government was conducting experiments genetic study. Research is not a new concept in the indigenous world. Indigenous scholarship (cid:858)the resear(cid:272)hed are (cid:271)e(cid:272)o(cid:373)i(cid:374)g the resear(cid:272)hers(cid:859) Privileges and prioritizes indigenous knowledges, philosophies, and ways of knowledge. Reduces exploitation, reduces idea that they are subjects. Physical possession of the data: engaging in research to build a future. Philosophical and methodological reorientations: shift to working with the community. (cid:859)s: demonstrate relevance, practice reciprocity, engage in relational accountability, be respectful. Both the community and academic team have rights and responsibilities. Negotiation early is important but so too is flexibility.
