The meteor heats up to hot temperatures and parts of the rock turns into gas. People were surprised because they thought the event was over after the bright light caused by the meteor had subsided. This proved to false however, as a few minutes later the airburst reached the surface and caused a massive shockwave: considering the massive explosion and shockwave, why wasn"t the damage in. Considering the massive explosion and shockwave, the damage in chelyabinsk was minimal because the meteorite exploded at a high altitude. The chelyabinsk meteor was not detected in advance because it was came out of the daylight side of our atmosphere and travelling so close to the sun that no telescope on earth could detect it.
