Document Summary

The bc forests were striving without any forest fires. Warmer temperature has boosted their population and allowing them to be found at greater and farther ranges. The pine beetles have invaded jack pine trees that are native to the atlantic provinces: in the past, the relationship between beetles and the forest was considered mutually beneficial. Explain how that has changed in recent years. Before the beetles would consume older trees that would allow them to produce more beetles but at the same time produce healthier forest. With warming temperatures, the atmosphere has gone dry which upsets the balance leaving healthy tree prone to being attacked: describe how female beetles have evolved to survive the natural defenses that the trees produce. Female beetles are able to ingest the resin (a chemical defence mechanism of the tree) and produce a pheromone which attracts other beetles.
