It hit california smaller and weaker, but still reeked havoc along the coast. The tsunami flooded the diesel generators cooling the core (several times higher than the defence walls). Back up batteries had only an 8 hour charge, so the cooling system was going to fail. The military tried to dump amounts of sea water on it to cool it down, to no avail.
