Documenting disasters: maintaining databases on disaster events can be difficult. Why: disasters co-occur (hurricanes cause floods, earthquakes cause landslides, etc, mortality difficult to count (famine, epidemics, lack of census talking (in developing countries) 14-hour power blackout (august: people consider certain events to be disasters, others not. Disasters and statistics: stat data reported in absolute terms (number of casualties, billions of dollars in damage, etc) how media reports this data. Impact of losses is felt differently from one place to next: ex. 10 fishers lost in remote village of 200 people vs. 10 factory workers in a city of 200,000 (bigger impact is bolded) Media and disasters: media tends to concentrate on, human interest, visual impact, events close to home, prioritized according to a na perspective, study by adams (1986) in terms of media attention, death of one north. American = deaths of: 3 eastern europeans, 9 latin americans, 11 middle easterners, 12 asians.
